ACFM (Alternating Current Field Measurement)The ACFM technique was originally developed to replace the use of magnetic particle inspection in the detection of surface breaking fatigue cracks located in offshore structures. ACFM is an electromagnetic technique subject to magnetic principals and is typically applied to ferromagnetic materials. ACFM techniques can be applied to rough surfaces and surfaces with coating of up to 0.25”. Applications:
Hydrogen Induced Cracking (HIC) Detection & Sizing in lieu of WFMT examinations can be performed without costly surface preparation such as sand or water blasting. Additionally, shallow, superficial cracking can be ignored, as the detection threshold for ACFM is ?1 mm or .039”. -Elevated Temperature examinations are performed for thermal fatigue cracking and other surface breaking flaws at temperatures of up to 900F.
