TOFD (Time of Flight Deffraction)TOFD is an automated or manually encoded ultrasonic test method. It uses a pitch catch arrangement with two probes, one on each side of the weld. Angled longitudinal waves are used to insonify the weld material and inspect for discontinuities. Applications -The primary application is weld inspection, and is used on pressure vessels, piping welds, etc. It can be used for both in service and newly fabricated work. -TOFD has excellent discontinuity sizing capability, so it is used for discontinuity monitoring to determine growth rates. -TOFD is sensitive to small discontinuities, and can be used to find and size small discontinuities. -Code Case 2235 allows the use of TOFD in lie of radiography on newly fabricated welds.
