Charpy Impact TestingImpact testing is performed to determine the notch toughness of a material. Notch toughness is measured by the amount of energy required to break a V-notch test specimen under impact loading, at a specific temperature. All low and medium alloyed carbon steels will behave in a completely brittle manner at low temperatures. The temperature that this phenomenon will occur is dictated by steel making practices, chemical composition, heat treatment and grain size. This type of testing is important when a steel structure will be placed in colder climates.
